BLS, first aid CPR AED and Red Cross certification in San Francisco

Every course runs at 26 7th St in SoMa. Here is who each one is for, what it takes and where to go next.

BLS · for healthcare workers and students

BLS certification in San Francisco

AHA BLS Provider is the American Heart Association course for healthcare providers. Complete HeartCode BLS online (sold separately by the AHA), then come in for a 60 minute skills session and test. The AHA BLS Provider card is valid for 2 years.

Who needs it

  • Hospital and clinic staff. Nurses, physicians, techs and other clinical staff at hospitals and clinics usually need a current AHA BLS card to work with patients. Check the exact course name your employer lists.
  • Nursing, medical and allied health students. Most clinical programs ask for BLS for healthcare providers before your first clinical placement, and many name the American Heart Association.
  • Dental offices. The Dental Board of California requires BLS for license renewal, from a provider such as the AHA or the Red Cross, and the course must include an in-person skills session and test. Online-only BLS does not count.
  • EMT students. Local EMT programs ask for AHA BLS before you start: City College of San Francisco accepts only a current AHA BLS card from Summer 2026 admission, and Skyline College's EMT course requires an AHA BLS Healthcare Provider card.

Heartsaver · for workplaces, coaches, trainers and the public

First aid CPR AED certification in San Francisco

AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED covers first aid, CPR and AED use for people outside healthcare: workplace responders, coaches, trainers and security. The online part is sold separately by the AHA, then the in-person session is 60 minutes. Valid for 2 years.

Who needs it

  • Workplace first aid responders. Offices, warehouses, construction and retail teams often name people to give first aid until help arrives. A Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED card is a common way to meet that.
  • Coaches, camps and youth programs. Coaches, after-school staff and camp counselors are often asked for first aid and CPR. If your program cares for infants and young children, check whether it needs a pediatric course instead.
  • Fitness and wellness. Personal trainers, yoga and group fitness instructors are usually asked by their certifying body or gym for a current CPR and AED card.
  • Security, hospitality and everyone else. Security officers, hotel and event staff, building managers and parents who want to be ready for an emergency.

Red Cross · for child care, schools, families and Red Cross employers

Red Cross certification in San Francisco

Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid CPR AED covers first aid, CPR and AED for adults, children and infants. The Red Cross online part is included with your booking, then the in-person session is 120 minutes. The Red Cross digital certificate is valid for 2 years.

Who needs it

  • Child care and preschool. California child care licensing asks for pediatric first aid and pediatric CPR. The state EMS Authority says that training may come from the American Red Cross or the AHA. Since January 1, 2026 it must also cover anaphylaxis and epinephrine auto-injectors, so confirm with your licensing office that this course meets your requirement.
  • Teachers and youth programs. California teaching credentials require infant, child and adult CPR that meets AHA or Red Cross standards. This course covers all three ages, which suits teachers, aides, coaches and camp staff.
  • Nannies and families. Nannies, babysitters, au pairs and parents who want adult and pediatric skills in one card.
  • Workplaces that ask for Red Cross. Employers and programs that name the American Red Cross for first aid, CPR and AED.

How it works

How blended learning works

Blended learning splits a CPR course in two: the knowledge part online, at your own pace, and a short in-person session for the hands-on skills and test. It is the same card as a full classroom course.

  1. 1

    Pick your course and date

Choose BLS, Heartsaver or Red Cross. The booking page opens right here on the site.

  2. 2

    Do the online part

AHA courses: buy the online course from the AHA. Red Cross: the online course is included. Finish it before class.

  3. 3

Come in for the skills session

Hands-on practice on manikins and AED trainers at 26 7th St, then the skills test: 60 minutes for AHA, 120 for Red Cross.

  4. 4

    Get your card

Pass the skills test and your AHA card or Red Cross certificate is issued. It is valid for 2 years.

AHA BLS Provider

The online part is HeartCode BLS, sold separately by the American Heart Association, not by CPR San Francisco. You buy it from the AHA, complete it before your session, and bring the certificate of completion.

The AHA says the online part takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on what you already know. Finish it before your skills session date: the session is the hands-on practice and test only.

AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED

The online part is the AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED online course, sold separately by the American Heart Association, not by CPR San Francisco. Complete it before your session and bring the certificate of completion.

You can work through it at your own pace. The in-person session at 26 7th St is the hands-on practice and the skills test.

Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid CPR AED

The Red Cross online part is included with your booking at CPR San Francisco. Complete it before your skills session date.

The Red Cross says the online part takes about 2.5 hours and must be finished before the skills session. The in-person session at 26 7th St is about 120 minutes, because it covers adult, child and infant skills.

FAQ

CPR classes in San Francisco: your questions

Where are CPR classes held in San Francisco?

At 26 7th St, San Francisco, CA 94103, in SoMa between Market and Mission Streets. The nearest station is Civic Center/UN Plaza, with BART and Muni Metro under Market between 7th and 8th Streets.

Which CPR class should I take?

If you work or study in healthcare, take AHA BLS Provider. If you need first aid and CPR for a job, a gym or a coaching role, take AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED. If your employer or licensing office asks for Red Cross, or you care for children, take Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED.

How long are the classes?

All three are blended. After the online part, the in-person skills session is about 60 minutes for AHA BLS and AHA Heartsaver, and about 120 minutes for Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED.

Is the online part included?

For the two AHA courses, no: the online part is sold separately by the American Heart Association. For the Red Cross course, yes: the online part is included with your booking.

How long is a CPR certification valid?

All three cards are valid for 2 years: the AHA BLS Provider card, the AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED card and the Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certificate.

When do I get my card?

The same day. Your eCard is issued the day you pass the skills session. AHA cards are issued by the AHA; Red Cross certificates are issued digitally by the Red Cross.

How do I get to 26 7th St by BART or Muni?

What is the difference between BLS and CPR?

BLS (Basic Life Support) is the American Heart Association CPR course for healthcare providers: high-quality CPR for adults, children and infants, AED use, bag-mask breaths and team resuscitation. A layperson CPR course such as Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED is for people outside healthcare and adds first aid.

Do I need BLS or Heartsaver for nursing school?

Nursing and other clinical programs usually ask for BLS for healthcare providers, so take AHA BLS Provider. Check your program handbook for the exact course name before you book.
